Hi Damdin,

Also I have another question I would like to ask you regarding the Blue ESR meter. When I was assembling the meter I’ve calibrated everything as in manual. Now I short to probes together it shows between 0.07-0.08. Is it normal or I have to press the switch while shorting probes every time to reset to zero?

Yes it is normal and you have to press the switch to reset the microcontroller.
If possible don’t use wire that is too long because it could affect the reading. Make sure the probe wires are only 30cm long.

Have a good day!

HI Jimmy,

I bought your book and I am learning a lot about repairing electronic equipment, and I am about to buy some more equipment to help me in troubleshooting electronic equipment.
Noted and thanks for the support.

I am working on repairing a lot of welding machines for the company I work for. Most of them are transformer type  machines, with electronic control circuits, The troubleshooting guides that come with the machines explain enough to tell me if the board is bad. But not what component are bad. This is why I bought your book.

Noted.

But I am still having trouble with the transformers. (other than when  there was a fire in the windings)  My questions is will your little tester tests something as big as a 600 amp DC welder

You mean the Blue  Ring Tester? In fact this tester is designed to test on consumer electronics transformers but i have buyer that bought it to test on car ignition coil. Since i have not use it on the welder machine thus i can’t give a definite answer if it can be tested or not.

and also do you have any experience with inverter type welding machines.

No i have not repair any of this machine before because I’m more on the consumer electronics area. If a machine use electronics board then there is a chance that it can be repaired. Do you have any photos to show me how is the circuit boards look like?

Thanks.

HI Rohit,

HI JESTINE HOW R U.HOPE U R FINE.

I’m fine thank you.

I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY DOWNLOADED ARTICLES EBOOK.THANK YOU.
I RECENTLY PURCHASED BLUE ESR METER AND I AM TRYING TO FIND
THE ESR OF OLD,NEW AND ONBOARDCAPS.WITHIN 5 MIN I CHECKED 7 BAD
ECAPS IN A AMPIFIER  AND REPLACED THEM,NOW AMPLIFIER WORKS PERFECTLY
WITHOUT HUMMING SOUND.BUT THOSE  BAD ECAPS LOOK GOOD OUTSIDE,NOT BULDGED,
NO LEAK, LOOK LIKE NEW BUT WITH BAD ESR VALUE.NOW I FEEL EVERY ELECTRONIC
REPAIRER MUST HAVE THIS METER AS FROM MY FIRST TROUBLESHOOTING
EXPERIENCE I SOLVED VERY QUICKLY.THANKS TO BOB PARKER.

Yes you are right you have made the right choice and every repairer should need this tester.

I AM ALSO
INTRESTED IN BUYING PEAK ATLAS SEMICONDUCTOR ANALYSER – DCA55A NOW
AVAILABLE IN INDIA.IF YOU KNOW BETTER THAN THIS PLEASE INFORM ME.
AGAIN THANK YOU.

You can check from the website http://www.peakelec.co.uk to compare the price.

HERE ARE SOME OF QUESTIONS,

1.IN PRIMARY SECTION,TWO 104,275V NON ELECTROLYTIC CAPACITORS ARE THERE.
ONE CAP ESR IS 17 AND OTHER IS 25.
IS THE CAP WITH ESR 25 IS GOOD OR BAD?

It is bad if you have check it off board.

2.IN ONE OF YOUR OLD BLOGS YOU ANSWERED A ERG MEMBER TO CHANGE THE VALUE
R7,FROM 2.2K TO 510 OHMS IN BLUE RING TESTER.IS IT OK IF I CHANGE IN MY
TESTER.BY CHANGING THE VALUE ,AM I GOING TO GET CORRECT RESULTS ?

Yes it should be 510 ohm because it can check coils more precise.

3.MY ESR METER TEST LEADS ARE JUST 30CMS.WHILE CHECKING THE ESR ONBOARD
SOMETIMES THE READING IS NOT STABLE.WHY?

You need sharp test probes and not alligator clips. Place it hard on those test point and you should get a much stable reading.

4.HOW THE MANUFACTURERS SOLDER THE COMPONENTS ON A PCB.
AT SOLDER SIDE COMPONENT LEADS ARE BENT AND SOLDERED PROPERLY?
ANY WEB HELP?

Sorry no info on this.

5.IN A VCD POWER SUPPLY BOARD,SECONDARY DIODE IS SR303.BETWEEN TWO
TERMINALS OF A DIODE A RESISTOR 10R AND A CERAMIC CAP 2A222J
IS CONNECTED IN SERIES.WHY?

You can refer to my power supply ebook at page 35

6.IN A BLUE ESR METER AFTER ASSEMBLING,THERE IS VR2=200R TRIMPOT
TO CALIBTRTE THE METER. USING 82R,1% RESISTOR WE ADJUST THE
TRIMPOT.82R IS DISPLAYED,MEANS CALIBRATED.

Yes.

NOW WE CAN GET THE
VALUE OF RESISTANCE FROM TRIMPOT.SO NOW CAN I PLACE A NORMAL
1/4 WATT RESISTOR IN PLACE OF TRIMPOT?

Yes you can.

WHY DESIGNER PUT THERE
TRIMPOT?

Because all components have tolerance.

AFTER USING FOR SOME MONTHS THE ESR RESULTS ARE STABLE
OR NOT?

It will be stable

OR AGAIN WE HAVE CALIBRATE IT?WHAT ABOUT UR METER,SINCE
YOU ARE USING IT FOR LONG TIME?

No problem with it and no need to recalibrate.

7.IF CABLE BETWEEN LCD CONTROLLER BOARD AND PANEL IS FAULT OR WHILE
REMOVING BACKLIGHT IF IT GETS DAMAGED OR CUT ,CAN I GET A NEW ONE
OR WE HAVE TO ALTER?

Difficult to get and you may need to modify it.

ALL MONITORS  HAVE SAME TYPE OF CABLE OR DIFFERENT?

Different cables and depends on type and model of monitors.

I bought your book testing electronics components, I have a question testing
micro SMD components usually they are found in Plasma TV’s and all laptops.
Do I have to solder them out to test each one of them? Or just set my
altimeter to low ohm’s range.

HI Alex,

Testing out of circuit will be a better. If you test on board and get good reading then you don’t need to solder it out. If you test on board and get different reading then you need to solder it out. Try smart tweezer from advencedevices.com could make smd checking easier.

HI Riaan,

I must complement you on the book ‘Testing Elec Components’! Great read, use it all the time!

Thanks.

Was wondering; Is there a way to use meter to check go/no go of transistors in-circuit?

Its rather bothersome to solder out each tranny!
How do you do it?

Some company that sell the testers claims that their transistor tester could test transistors on board. However from my experience using a low voltage to test transistors (so that it would not trigger the transistor) is not accurate that’s why i rather use an analog meter that set to x10 kohm that have 12 volt output to really check the transistor and i check it off board. Low voltage usually not good enough to fully test a semiconductor.

Congrat on the meters that you have built!

Jestine
