As I entered church Sunday morning, the place was really dark and no electricity. I asked the pastor what was wrong because I thought it was no electricity from the main line of the company. He smiled and said no, we have an issue here in the building. Something has triggered the earth leakage button on the main electrical panel. After a long search, we found what was wrong. Take a look.

how to fix amplifier

It was the sound amplifier that causing the electrical issues. I took it to my shop the next day and dismantled and did some work on it. It was dirty and I cleaned it but it was not the issue. The Issue was the main power key on the amplifier.

When I was looking for the main fault at church, the moment I tried to turn the amplifier on, the issue happened again. When I took it to my shop and checked the main power key this is what I found.

on off switch fix

Sorry it is a little bit out of focus but if you look to the left side of the key, you will find the fault. It was corroded and it was sparking.

switch problem in amplifier

Faulty pins inside the power button. As you can see one of them was melting.

When I power key is in ON position, only one side of it would give me continuity beep when tested with my multi meter. Even with the key on OFF position, I still get a continuity beep on one side of the key. It was clear that it was a faulty power button and it has to be replaced.

It was a 16 amp power key and it did not have a light indicator on it when it is in ON position. My pastor explained that they had this power amplifier for almost 15 years and it is first time to cause any issue.

amplifier repair and fix

This is the new replacement with a nice looking power key. When powering ON the amplifier, it actually lights up the light inside of the key to indicate the device is on. A big help said the sound technician at my church which I was glad to hear.

This was installed about two weeks ago and since then, no electrical issue. It only cost two dollars to repair yet it saved an expensive professional device from the dump. My Pastor was thinking of replacing this old one but he was happy to keep the device and saving money at the same time. Mission accomplished.

It is a bit strange that the earth leakage button was triggered because there was no earth leakage. Probably the church has a bad grounded earth line because in such cases these things happen without any real flowing earth leakage current. Which in my country often happened when lightning triggered these similar problems in for instance pigstables at farms when the ground pin had a bad too high resistance to earth.

Albert: it is not strange my friend. the church has a perfect ground and recently we tested it out because we were getting an Audio hum in the speakers. it was tested out by a professional. the reason it was tripped because the technician was pressing the power switch on and off many times till it comes on because there was no light indicator on the switch. one of the legs was switching on and off and the other leg of the power switch was on all the time due to the bad switch i repaired.

You are right, Waleed. It’s just a simple wear and tear problem due to age and years in service.
