As I was about to go home in the evening, a customer brought this to my shop for repair. He wanted to fix something as soon as possible. He showed me a small hair trimmer that runs on 110 AC volts. It was not rechargeable but has a long AC cord attached to it.

I went back to the shop and right away dismantled the hair trimmer and it seem like it had better days.

A hair trimmer was purchased in USA by this customer and was brought here to the Middle East to be used. The customer gave this hair trimmer as a gift to one of his relatives and in the process, that relative connected it to a 220 AC source and it was badly damaged.

As seen in the photo, the resister fuse was damaged beyond any recognition and I am very sure the bridge rectifier was damaged in the process as well.

My main concern was the motor of the hair trimmer. I saw that it was a 110 DC volt motor.  That means, if the motor was damaged, the whole thing goes to trash. I was willing to go the extra mile for this guy to help him out.

I did not have any source of 110 DC volts to try the motor. The only way to test the motor is by replacing the bridge rectifier and the fuse resistor.

It was not hard to find either the bridge rectifier or the fuse resistor.

Once I replaced both of them and made sure there are no broken lines on board, I connected it to a 220-110 step down AC transformer, the motor started to run normally.

This is the bridge rectifier replacement. It was not brand new but it is a part that I found in my shop.

The customer was happy to see the hair trimmer repaired and right away he took it back to his relative and explained what to do when using the hair trimmer.

Mission Accomplished.

  2. Albert van Bemmelen says:

Good job Waleed! I however wonder if such a free gift is still worth having when the customer also needs to buy a 220-110 step down AC transformer? Only a transformer will guarantee the safe use in a bathroom. Without it there always is a chance that the user gets electrocuted when the metal of motor or razorblade directly conduct the AC electricity of the power lines.

    1. Waleed Rishmawi says:

Albert: thanks man.the step down transformer is not that expensive beside, we do not use such devices in the bathrooms because there is another sink outside the bathroom for such purpose (our houses built that way). have a good day

12 x (9 volt) batteries = 108 vdc works also for testing just the motor.

    1. Waleed Rishmawi says:

Jim: yes, I am very familiar with that but the repair took only about five minutes, no big deal but thanks for the input though.
