how to repair tv blue screen

This Syber CRT TV 21″ came in with the complaint of no tuning and no channel. Later the display became blue screen- see the photo below:

I took out the cover and head straight to the tuner section to see if there is any dry joints or not. There were no dry joints found so I deceided to check on the Tuner important voltages with power On.

The first point I checked was the AGC voltage and it was found to be good (4.2 volt).

Next I checked on the VT voltage and it was found to be good too (33 volt)-see the photo below:

The other tuner pins all the voltages were found to be good.

From experience, if all the voltages in the Tuner pins are good then the biggest suspect is the tuner itself.

I kept a used tuner in my compartment and took it out and fixed into the TV and powered On.

Guess what? All the channels came back. I was delighted  because I can charge my customer.

Conclusion- For your information, it is not easy to repair tuner circuitry because of lack of schematic and the parts are very small. The time spent on repairing tuner just not worth it. Get a used or new tuner so that the extra time you can use it to repair some other equipment. Ok will see you again in the next article.

I like the fact that you mentioned not repairing items that are just not worth the money you can get for fixing, way too many techs will waste time on low-profit repairs for little or no money.

My Decision was that, repairs are necessary in large quantities. A single item is time waster. But as if that’s not enough, clients mix their acquittance with problem solutions. Is it true that in Japan, no repair shops exist?

Good job, Suranga. Whether or not a device is worth repairing depends on what the customer is willing to pay for the repair. Sometimes sentimental value may be a contributing factor in their decision.

I’m really surprised to hear that you still have analog TV channels in your area. I stay in Uganda, but it’s now 4 years since the transition from analog to digital took place. That article greatly reminds me of such days of tuner failures. Thanks a lot bro!

Tuner can be repaired, they are also prone to crack board, loose connection/ cold solder, dirty pcb. I made these tuner back to life by simply cleaning and resoldering them with the use of small tip soldering iron, thin solder and magnifying glass..specially on Jvc,Sharp,Panasonic and Sony tuners.

Thanks a lot for sharing this tutorials us. A customer brought similar problem to me. The TV is working quite alright but all of a sudden there would be a horizontal line at the middle dividing the TV into two, the upper will show while nothing showing below, and until it’s being hit by the side of the TV before getting back to normal. I have not opened it but I just need a clue towards the solution.
    Thanks
