PHILIPS DVD Not Open tray

The customer sent to me this Philips DVD player (model of DVP3120K ) with the complaint of the front loading tray can’t be opened. Pressing the front open/close tray button have not effect at all.

You can see the top and the below photos:

DVD Tray not open

Once the cover was removed there were three parts that you can see. It was the power supply board, the mainboard and the disc assembly which include the motor, lens, cables and the tray itself-see the photo below:

Since the complaint have connection with the tray so I focused on the tray first before checking on other sections.

The part that I want to check was the belting and true enough the belt seems to be loosen (low tension) and I believe this had caused the tray can’t be opened.

DVD belting problem

After done the replacement of putting in a new belt, I used mechanism grease to apply on the side slider to make sure the disc tray will have a smooth entry and eject.

Next, I pressed on the open/close button again of the DVD player and found that now the opening and closing of tray was superb as can be seen in the three photos below:

Conclusion- Assuming if the belting was good then I have to check on the open/close button switch contact, cable, motor, dc supply to motor, mainboard and etc. But in this case, it was just the belting problem.

Good job Suranga,…… or in most of my Philips or XBOX tray-not-opening problem cases the magnet of the top disc holder that is too strong for the motor mechanics to be able to release the top magnet from the motordrive when it was closed.

Good & simple repair, just how I like it! Sadly, here in America most consumer throw away their electronic when a quick fix is all what it needs. I have a customer that canvas various mid to high ends neighborhoods in search for such items. From stereos to T.V. and anything between. He bring those finds to me and if is economical for him to repair and make money, he will use my services. Then, he turn around and resale them at a local flea market for a profit… a similar situation in a recent week was an Xbox game console. Good article and success to you!
