The welding machine business is blooming as a lot of welders are bringing their machine to be either fixed or maintained. Unfortunately, not many welding technicians think of maintaining their machine but most of them bring them when the machine breaks down. So sometimes I get machines with tough repair and sometimes I get a machines like this with just a minor one, take a look.

how to fix welding machine

All welding machines have different sizes and different shapes but one thing in common is the inside. They all function the same way, parts do the same job even if they have different part number.

As I took the cover off and looked inside this machine, I could see some dust but not much; it looked normal but if you look closer you will see the fault. Do you see the fault?

faulty capacitor

Here is a close up of the problem, do you see the fault? Every time I open any welding machine, I look here and check the main capacitors. It is a good procedure to do that.

bulged capacitor

To get this bad capacitor I have to take off four screws beneath that metal plate.

It was 400 volts 470 uf and I already have the part ready I my shop to replace this one but the question here, is it the only fault here or there is more?

how to fix and repair welding machine

This is a used one that I have plenty of in my shop but I know it is working fine and it will fit as a good replacement for that bad capacitor. Once it was replaced, I checked for other faulty parts, bridge rectifier and around that area, I could not find anything wrong so it was time to power on the machine and hope for the best.

welding machine board repair

Seeing that green light coming on was a very good sign but further testing is needed to make sure all is well.

how to check welding machine

It seems like all is well. If the red light was on, then we have big issues here that have to do with either the transistors or the Mosfets.

how to check measure welding machine voltage

This is the test that I was looking forward to see. If I do not have any readings here, then the machine would not work. Glad to see these readings here and based on that, the machine is up and running.

Of course it has to go through some tough welding at my brother’s welding shop just to make sure all is well.

It was tested and found up to its welding specifications.

Mission Accomplished.

Waleed Rishmawi I have similar problem with inverter welder looks like same PC board and mosfet k50t60 my question is where to get mosfet with that part number,as it comes up as a IGBT which isn’t right for the board as it’s marked GSD on the pins on board so IGBT won’t work as I found out they blow when power turns on,still can’t find cause of original failure

Strange thing is that in my country and Europe there is much commotion about reaching the CO2 Emission Goals. Which means that many house building projects and other work related projects are cancelled or put on hold because of it. Which not seems to be the case in other countries like in yours where Welding jobs obviously are needed because of local building activities? The same deviations in regulation are applicable on the use of airconditioning refrigerants (fluids) that are very strict in my country. But are easily bought without any regulation in countries like Dubai in supermarkets. Where any layman can refill his aircondtion system at home without any supervision. Which is not allowed in my and surrounding countries. (because of Global warming and the Ozon layer). This way the effect on good global damage control is in vain.

    1. Waleed Rishmawi says:

Albert: what country are you from? yes in my country there are control over it but not like the other countries. my brother recently bought a CO2 welding machine and he had to go through rules and regulations about it like self safety and surrounding safety. like I said, we have it but not much.
      have a blessed day
